How to play a Singing Bowl



The Singing bowls come in different shape and sizes. Depending upon the shape of the bowl, the playing techniques are slightly different. There three basic shapes. Most of the hand hammered bowls are straight up. Most of the caste and milled bowls are caved in and the third kind is wide shape. The easiest one to play is caste bowl You have to twirl the mallet from the center of the bowl using your wrist. For the straight up and open bowl, you have to run the mallet go around the edge using whole arm. It is a good practice to turn the mallet clockwise only because in Nepal and Tibet, when you go around the God, you go clockwise. Please follow the following steps to play the Singing Bowl.




  1. Put the bowl in your left open palm without touching the bowl with any finger. (If you are a left-handed, just reverse it)

  2. Hold a mallet with your right hand just like the way you hold a pen

  3. Sit straight and bring your left hand with the bowl close to your chest without touching the chest

  4. Press the mallet against the edge of the bowl then go around the bowl pressing firmly

  5. Keep going around and around until the starts to sing

  6. Once it starts to sing, slow down and find the best for bowl to sing

  7. Feel the vibration and hear the soothing sound of the bowl


If you have hard time making the bowl hum, start with a gentle tap and twirl the mallet। Alternatively, you can just tap and enjoy the sound and vibration of the bowl.
